Where Are you

Lyrics by Victor DeFlorio

 I’ve seen a man
A sick and broken man
What was going through your mind
Were you the one we thought
Or were you lying all the time

I said who are you
Where did you go
Will you ever be the same
Time is running out
And there’s no one else to blame

It’s something I can’t understand
Something that I just can’t see
Something unnatural
Something I never thought you’d be

We had such fun
When we were young
Now it’s not the same
You’ve changed so much
And I’m so out of touch

Seems you’ve reached the end
There’s nothing left to say
We could see it comin’ down
It’s time you stood tall and stopped running away

It’s something I can’t understand
Something that I just can’t see
Something unnatural
Something I never thought you’d be

"Where Are You” was written about the shock and disillusionment experienced when you learn that someone you thought you knew is not who you thought they were. Everyone has a dark secret within…..some darker than others. Once the secret is revealed, things are never the same. These secrets are usually revealed when a person hits rock bottom…..when people are their most vulnerable. So the “where” in the song refers not to the physical, but to the emotional or psychological.

The middle eight part of the song was added to darken it up a bit. Being in a major key, the song has kind of an up feeling to it. In reality, the story is not a happy one. This middle part was written to address the sense of anger and disappointment conveyed in the lyrics.

I am by no means a lyricist, but the words to this song came very quickly. I was actually in the process of cutting a guitar track for a friend’s project, when I started jotting them down. He asked me what I was doing, and when I told him, he asked if they were for his band. I immediately told him….”No they’re for Quick.” Haven’t heard much from him since!
